  • fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) may play key role in anxiety| Science| Reuters: Rats bred to be highly anxious had very low levels of FGF2 compared with wild type. When anxious rats' living conditions were improved (new toys to explore, an obstacle course, a bigger cage) FGF2 levels increased and they became less anxious. Both environment induced increases in, and injections of FGF2 restored wild type anxiety levels. Post mortem studies of severely depressed people revealed that the gene coding for FGF2 was producing very low levels of the growth factor, which is known primarily for organizing the brain during development and repairing it after injury. FGF2 may be a marker for genetic vulnerability to anxiety and depression. But it can also respond to changes in the environment in a positive way, possibly by preserving new brain cells. While both the calm and anxious rats produced the same number of new brain cells, these cells were less likely to survive in the high-anxiety rats, the team found.

  • Palms Can Foretell Cancer: Curling, Thickening of Palm May Mean Cancer of Ovaries, Prostate, Other Types. The symptoms: curling or thickening of the palm with swelling of the fingers, making the hand look wooden. It's called PFPAS -- palmar fasciitis and polyarthritis syndrome. PFPAS has been linked not only to cancer of the ovaries, but also to cancers of the prostate, blood, lung, breast, and pancreas. What's the link? Researchers aren't sure. Stratton and colleagues suggest that a chemical signal in the body, called connective tissue growth factor or CTGF, might play a role.
